Caserta is located in southern Italy, in the Campania region, 30 km north of Naples. The most famous landmark of the city is the Royal Palace of Caserta from the 18th century, the former residence of the House of Bourbon. The palace is one of the largest royal palaces in the world and dazzles visitors with its magnificent architecture, lavish interiors and beautiful gardens.
The Royal Palace of Caserta
The palace was built by Luigi Vanvitelli in the 18th century and was inspired by El Escorial in Spain and the Palace of Versailles in France. The huge facade of the palace is 250 meters long and contains 1200 rooms. Baroque and Rococo styles are mixed in the decoration of the interior spaces. The palace also houses the San Leucio silk factory, which was one of the most modern silk factories in the 18th century.
The Royal Gardens of Caserta:
Behind the palace lies a huge, 120-hectare garden, which was designed in the English style. The garden features fountains, sculptures, ponds, waterfalls and lush vegetation. In the garden there is a fountain called Diana’s Bath, which is one of the largest fountains in the world. Pro tip: there is an electric scooter for 5-10 euros, and there is a small bus back there for 15 euros, which is well worth it if you don’t want to walk 10 km back there. Even then, it’s worth it, but it’s really tiring on the way back.
Apart from the Royal Palace of Caserta, the city also houses the Church of Sant’Agostino, the San Carlo Theater and the Museo Civico di Caserta.
Approach to Caserta from Naples:
Caserta is easily accessible from Naples by public transport (train or bus) and by car.
Caserta By train:
Trenitalia trains run regularly from Naples to Caserta. The train journey takes about 30 minutes and the ticket price is 2-5 euros. PRO tip, when you get off the train, there will be a long corridor and you can go right and left, don’t go right but left when you get out, you will see the palace right away, it took us through the city with a 4 km detour. Although we drank very good coffee in the meantime, Google Maps made us feel good. So go left.
Caserta By bus:
SITA buses also run from Naples to Caserta. The bus journey takes about 45 minutes and the ticket price is 2-5 euros.
You can get to Caserta by car from Naples on the A1 motorway. The drive takes about 30 minutes.
Caserta is a great choice for a day trip from Naples. The city awaits visitors with fascinating historical and cultural attractions. The palace is very beautiful inside, you can’t get enough of it, so it’s a very good experience, I can only recommend it.
