Spent two magical weeks in Scotland, where I not only discovered the country’s stunning beauty and rich history, but also saw the filming locations of my favorite movies come to life.
Edinburgh
I began my journey in Edinburgh, the vibrant capital city. Walking through the historic Old Town, I was captivated by the medieval atmosphere, and on the Royal Mile, I was amazed by the rows of impressive buildings. From the castle, I enjoyed a breathtaking panorama, and from Arthur’s Seat, I admired the view of the city.
The Scottish Highlands
I headed towards the rugged landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, where I gazed into the dark waters of Loch Ness in the hope of catching a glimpse of Nessie (but no luck there). Hiking to the top of Ben Nevis, I felt the power of nature and enjoyed the local hospitality in the cozy Scottish pubs. It was very exhausting but worth it.
Isle of Skye
The scenery on the Isle of Skye was magical. The iconic mountains of the Storr and the Quiraing offered stunning views, and the cliffs of Kilt Rock embraced the crashing waves of the sea. The mountains were reflected in the mirror of the Red Lake, and in the local pubs, we sipped Scottish whiskey and chatted, camping on the beach. It was very atmospheric at night, it rained and you could hear the crashing waves.
Inverness and Beyond
In Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, I visited Cawdor Castle, the legendary home of Macbeth. This was followed by the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye, a fairytale world of crystal-clear waterfalls and turquoise pools. The streams cascading from the Cuillin Mountains carved out this stunning natural wonder, where the braver ones can take a dip in the cool water. The hiking trails wind their way up the mountainside, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
Following in the Footsteps of Film
In addition, much to my delight, I visited the Glenfinnan Viaduct, the iconic route of the Hogwarts Express, and Loch Shiel, where Hagrid’s hut stood. I was lucky enough to see the train arrive just as I got there.
As a childhood favorite, I also visited the filming locations of the classic Highlander movie in the village of Luss, where I could walk in the footsteps of the film and feel the weight of Scottish history in Glencoe Valley. On my way back, I stopped at Doune Castle for a few pictures.
A Magical Adventure
This trip was not just a getaway, but a real adventure, full of experiences, discoveries, magic, and magical filming locations. Scotland has captured my heart, and I hope to return soon.
