A long-awaited dream came true when we finally managed to book flights and accommodation to Norway. Our destination was Bergen, which promised to be the perfect starting point for exploring the country’s most spectacular landscapes and waterfalls. We chose the summer season because this is when the weather is most favorable: pleasant spring temperatures, blooming meadows, and sunshine awaited us.
Reality exceeded our expectations. Bergen is truly a beautiful city, surrounded by fjords, with colorful wooden houses and a vibrant atmosphere. Bathed in the spring sunshine, the sight was even more magical. However, as in a true port city, we quickly experienced the whims of Norwegian weather: the blinding sunshine could be replaced by pouring rain in an instant. But this didn’t bother us in the least, as armed with umbrellas we could enjoy walking through the city’s charming streets in any weather.
Our Norwegian adventure unfolded with a blend of unexpected detours and breathtaking encounters. The second day kicked off with a rather unpleasant surprise when we arrived at the Sixt car rental agency, where we had a reservation made months in advance. To our dismay, we were informed that they only accepted credit cards as payment and could not process debit cards. The booking confirmation mentioned the need for a physical card and their inability to accept digital payments, but there was no mention of credit cards being mandatory.
Fortunately, we managed to find another rental agency nearby, Hertz, where we were able to secure the last available car. It was a stroke of luck, and we were grateful to be back on our journey.
Our Norwegian adventure unfolded with a captivating blend of breathtaking beauty and unexpected detours. The journey began on the scenic 7-mile road, where we were mesmerized by the grandeur of Norway’s fjords, their tranquil waters reflecting the towering mountains that surrounded them. Along the way, we were treated to a series of cascading waterfalls, each one a testament to nature’s raw power and artistry.
The winding road led us to the Vøringsfossen waterfall, its thunderous roar echoing through the valley, leaving us in awe of its sheer scale and magnificence. After marveling at this natural wonder, we continued our journey northward, making a stop at the picturesque Tvindefossen waterfall, another gem tucked away amidst the Norwegian wilderness.
Leaving the narrow mountain roads behind, we found ourselves on the comfort of the highway, where tunnels carved through the mountains offered a glimpse into the heart of the earth. The landscape transformed into rolling hills and lush meadows, a welcome respite from the grandeur of the fjords.
On the third day, we embarked on a boat cruise, eager to explore Bergen’s fjords from the perspective of the water. Our vessel, a haven of comfort and convenience, glided through the Mostraumen Strait, one of Norway’s narrowest fjords. As we navigated the waterway, we were surrounded by towering cliffs, their sheer faces reflected in the still fjord waters.
The cruise offered a unique opportunity to witness the beauty of Norway’s natural wonders up close. We passed by cascading waterfalls, their thunderous roars adding to the drama of the landscape. Quaint Norwegian villages, their colorful houses clinging to the hillsides, offered glimpses into the lives of the local people.
Highlights of the Cruise:
- Kastefossen Waterfall: Our first encounter with a waterfall on the cruise, Kastefossen’s cascading waters provided a mesmerizing spectacle. The boat paused at the base of the waterfall, allowing us to fully appreciate its raw power and beauty.
- Norwegian Villages: Scattered along the fjord’s shores, these charming villages, with their traditional wooden houses and vibrant colors, added a touch of human presence to the otherwise pristine landscape.
- Mostraumen Strait: The narrowest fjord in Norway, navigating the Mostraumen Strait was an exhilarating experience. The towering cliffs on either side seemed to close in on us, creating a sense of awe and wonder.
Our five days in Bergen were an adventure filled with unforgettable experiences. The city’s stunning landscapes, the magical world of the fjords, the roar of the waterfalls, and the diversity of Norwegian culture left a lasting impression on us.
It is important to note that this trip was organized by ourselves, which allowed us to enjoy the programs for a fraction of the price we would have had to pay through a travel agency. We invested a lot of time and energy into planning, but every minute was worth it.
