Wizz Air has announced that approximately 40 of its Airbus A320neo family aircraft will remain grounded through fiscal year 2026 due to ongoing issues with Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G-JM engines. This grounding affects nearly 20% of the airline’s A320neo fleet, significantly impacting its operational capacity. In response, Wizz Air has secured a two-year commercial support agreement with Pratt & Whitney, which includes operational assistance and a compensation package to mitigate financial losses associated with the grounded aircraft.
Despite these challenges, Wizz Air plans to resume growth by fiscal year 2026, with the anticipated delivery of 50 new Airbus A321neo aircraft. This expansion is expected to increase the proportion of A321neos in the fleet to 77%, enhancing fuel efficiency and supporting the airline’s sustainability goals. The grounding stems from issues related to powder metal defects in the PW1100G-JM engines, which have also affected other carriers operating Airbus A320neo family aircraft.
